Whale Watching With My Mom!

At work, this solicitator came by offering cremation services for our patients. Anyhow, we took his card and he was just so nice enough that he gave me and my mom 2 tickets each for free whale watching!

We both totally wanted to go. But my dad was sooo afraid of the ocean, so he wasn't gonna go with her. And Jeric gets seasick, plus he thinks it'll be boring, so yah, he wouldn't go with me either. Soo, my mom booked a trip for just me and her for today. I didn't know Mom Samoza would also love to go, so I ended up giving the extra two tickets to her and Dad Samoza.

Anyhow, we got there pretty early and I haven't eaten anything yet. So we went into a small donut / sandwich shop and I grabbed me a strawberry croissant. I really wanted the ham & cheese, but wouldn't want any lactose issues on a 2 hour boat ride! Hahaha.

I also went to check out what types of marine life were spotted within the past few days. Looks like whales have been spotted everyday and tons of dolphins too!

We boarded off the docks in Balboa and we were off! We actually didn't even stray far from the coast to spot the whales! We found two whales, mom and baby, right off the coast! They were seriously like maybe 20-30 feet away from shore. They were grey whales and the sailor was giving us information saying that they come right up to the shore a lot of times just to rest while they're on their migrating journey up to Alaska. A lot of times the large grey whales go right up to where the water is only deep enough for them to rest their bellies on the sand with barely much water above them! This time; however, it was a little bit different because it was a mom whale with her baby. She was apparently teaching her child how to swim and float. The baby was hilarious. Kept sticking it's head out of the water! We were very very lucky too we sat there for a good thirty minutes just waiting and watching as the whales would breach water. And they were so very active, especially that little one!

After thirty minutes, we left to go further out and find some dolphins. We were making our way when all of a sudden the boat does a 180! And we started heading back. I was wondering if that was like the end of our trip. Very confusing, that's for sure. But then we slowed down in the middle and the sailor told us that a whale was spotted out here. And they can see it about to breach water, but just at that exact moment a stupid speed boat decides now is the best time to speed right where the whale was about to breach! The sailor was telling us he literally ran right over the whale! Probably scared the whale! Ugh! Cuz we stood out there for 10 minutes and got nothing!

But all was not a loss, they spotted this weird bony fish called a mola mola. Like the guy described it as being made of all bones and that if you touched it, it would feel like the side of the boat! Anyways, he was totally chillin, catching some sun. Hahaha. My mom said, "He looks like he's dead!" Hahahaha.

After that, they took us to a buoy that now held a buncha sea lions (earlier we passed by the buoy and it was empty)!

And that was the end of our trip. Not bad, not bad at all! I really expected to only see dolphins since thousands were spotted everyday, but we didn't, instead we saw the grey whale! Which was way better!
